Mike Mondo's National Wrestling Alliance Target Comes into Focus
Mike Mondo arrived in the National Wrestling Alliance specifically to confront one person — yet he steadfastly refused to reveal who that was. The target of Mondo’s ambiguous ire was perhaps finally revealed on NWA Powerrr.
“I said everyone would know my purpose for being here in time—my time,” Mondo stated when asked about his actions on the Jan. 28 installment of NWA’s Tuesday flagship broadcast. "That time has finally arrived on NWA Powerrr!"
The episode featured Burchill facing the debuting Baba Thunder. After a brutalized Burchill won the one-sided affair by disqualification, Mondo emerged as the apparent puppeteer pulling the Polish-Nigerian giant’s strings.
“Mondo’s been saying in all these interviews that he has one person he wants to take down in the NWA!” lead broadcaster Joe Galli speculated as Mondo stepped into the ring to gloat. “Was he talking about Burchill the whole time?”
“I’m shocked!” exclaimed William Patrick Corgan from the NWA Powerrr commentary desk. “I was not aware of any tension between these two guys coming in!”
It’s indeed a mystery, and Mondo is making no effort to clarify. Corgan, the NWA President and owner, is not the only one confused by the former WWE World tag team champion’s behavior. NWA fans—and possibly even Burchill himself—remain in the dark about Mondo’s murky motives at this time.
“That’s because what I do is nobody’s damn business until I say it is!” Mondo asserts.
“I don’t owe the fans an explanation; I don’t owe the National Wrestling Alliance an explanation; I don’t even owe Burchill an explanation,” he continues. “Then again, I don’t have to explain anything to Burchill. He knows exactly why I feel the way I do!”
In an effort to find answers, NationalWrestlingAlliance.com delved into the pair’s pasts, scouring for any hint of conflict in their shared histories. To find a time when Mondo and Burchill crossed professional paths, one must go back more than a decade to when both competed in and eventually captured the Ohio Valley Wrestling title.
Despite their intermittent work for the company over multiple years, only one match is recorded between the two. They squared off on July 21, 2007, with Mondo defeating Burchill in a battle devoid of titles or indicators of the apparent ill-will to come.
“My reasons will be clear soon enough,” Mondo promises.
“The fact remains I’m here with a very defined mission,” he says. “And whether it’s Burchill or anyone else on the National Wrestling Alliance roster, beware… It’s Gut Check Time!”
New episodes of NWA Powerrr are released every Tuesday at 6:05 PM EST on the National Wrestling Alliance X (formerly Twitter) account.
