Aron Stevens Addresses Rumors He’s Scouting NWA Territories for Clients
Led by Aron Stevens, Blunt Force Trauma dominated the National Wrestling Alliance until June, when Knox & Murdoch unseated the masked duo as NWA World Tag Team Champions.
With Stevens’ demands to overturn the decision apparently cast aside — it has been five months — his eyes have turned to the growing NWA territory system. Many speculate the wily manager might be prepared to poach additional clientele from the network of promotions now under the NWA banner.
“I have been asked that question many times — as far as ‘expanding the ranks,’” Stevens confirms. “To answer that would be to reveal my plans. Do you think I am foolish enough to give away my plans?”
Though mum on that point, Stevens has no shortage of praise for the growing system of official National Wrestling Alliance territories. Over the last six months, he’s traveled to all five promotions across the U.S., aligning himself occasionally with talent from each.
“The amazing thing about the NWA territory system is the foundation is the same, the building blocks are the same: What constitutes a good professional wrestler,” he says.
“If you’re truly a master of your craft, you can wrestle anybody anywhere at a top level,” Stevens opines.
“The different NWA territories, each affiliated with different schools, fundamentally teach the same thing,” he says. “That’s what makes them true NWA territories, the fundamental beliefs on how to train somebody to be a pro wrestler.”
Each territory is special, he says, in how it presents talent, stories and action. This, Stevens notes, continues NWA’s long history of uniting regional promotions with unique, regional flavor.
“When people went to different territories back in the day, geographically, yes, it was a different place, but each had a soul,” he says.
Stevens details distinctions between Memphis — centered around greats like Jerry Lawler and Lance Russell — and the Dusty Rhodes-driven Florida territory. St. Louis, where Harley Race promoted wrestling at The Chase, he asserts, reflected its own facets and values of the NWA.
“Every single territory had its own essence, its own soul,” Stevens says, assuring that still exists in today’s National Wrestling Alliance.
“What you get in Cleveland with EC3 and Exodus Pro, it’s a very stylized presentation of their product. NWA Southeast-Joe Cazana Promotions is also a stylized presentation, and the two are not really alike,” he points out. “Visually they look different, production-wise they do things differently, but they both do them right."
Recently announced NWA-World League Wrestling, the Missouri-based promotion founded by Race, adds another layer of history and legend to the NWA’s expansion. The company brings its own traditions and legacy, Stevens says.
“From the pictures on the walls to the color of the ring ropes, which Harley designed, the championship belts hanging up there, you're getting a visual feel for who Harley Race was,” he shares.
“If I didn’t know who Harley Race was and I walked in there, I’d immediately get this sense of reverence,” Stevens says of WLW’s headquarters and affiliated Harley Race Academy. “It’s like a museum, truly.”
WLW’s ties to the eight-time NWA World’s champion go beyond physical tributes, stresses Stevens. Fans — “Though I hesitate to use that term for these cretins,” he snipes — are treated to future NWA stars steeped in the training once taught by Race himself.
“They’re being trained in things taught to them by one of if not the greatest NWA World’s champions of all time,” he says, “That’s the soul of WLW.”
Still, Stevens remains tight-lipped about his intent in scouring NWA promotions. Certainly he is seeing the massive amount of talent available through these partnerships up-close, but what that means he will not say.
“If you want to know whether I ‘expand the ranks,’” he says smugly, “I suggest you stay tuned to NWA Powerrr!”
