1986 Crockett Cup Winners: The Road Warriors
In 1986, there was no duo in pro wrestling more dominant than The Road Warriors. As with all competition of that generation, the pair ran rough-shod through the inaugural tournament to claim the prize.
It was only one of many highlights in their Hall of Fame career, which started when Animal and Hawk joined manager “Precious” Paul Ellering in Georgia Championship Wrestling.
In 1983, they debuted with the National Tag Team titles. By their departure a year later, they were three-time champs, trading the belts in high-profile feuds with Buzz and Brett Sawyer and King Kong Bundy and The Spoiler.
The next stop was the American Wrestling Association. There they collected the first of their eventual four World Tag Team titles.
The Road Warriors defeated Ronnie Garvin and Magnum TA in the tournament finals on April 19 in New Orleans. They would go on to shatter pro wrestling records, becoming the only team in history to win the NWA, AWA and WWF World Tag Team Titles. They were voted Pro Wrestling Illustrated ‘Tag Team of the Year’ four times.
